Jerry Cornelius is an English assassin, physicist, rock star and messianic figure for the Age of Science, and he is a recurring figure in Michael Moorcock's fiction. This volume gathers the last two novels of the Cornelius Quartet, so it closes that sequence of books.
In The English Assassin, Cornelius rises from the deep to watch the world come to an end, and to break up the largest party ever held west of Ladbroke Grove. It is his third appearance, after A Cure for Cancer and The Final Programme, and the story moves fast and turns violent.
In The Condition of Muzak the chaos of the earlier books has settled into a surreal Europe split into rival city states. Cornelius, increasingly acting out the role of Pierrot, has lost his power to change events, and his quest narrows to a search for his sister Catherine. The novel moves through music, myth and different universes of time.
