Thirteen-year-old Lamar Washington has a reputation as a prankster, and it is getting in the way of his wish for a girlfriend. His older brother Xavier, a basketball star, treats him with contempt, and Lamar's asthma keeps him away from most sports. Bowling is the one he loves, and the story turns on his wish to receive a special ball from his hero, the professional bowler Bubba Sanders.
Along the way Lamar gains and loses a girlfriend, takes money from a bowling hustle arranged by a shady acquaintance, and works through a tense relationship with Xavier. The story also touches on the grief of losing his mother and on the steady support he finds in his strict but loving father and in his community. Readers who enjoy a funny, candid narrator will find plenty to like.
