About this book

George Frost Kennan was among a select set of American foreign service officers schooled in Soviet matters during the late 1920s and early 1930s. In the Cold War years he became the leading expert on Soviet affairs inside the government.

David Allan Mayers draws on a wide body of original research to write Kennan's life. The book examines Kennan's high-level part in making foreign policy and interprets the dilemmas that his career raised for US policy.
