In the mid-nineteenth century, audiences in more than a hundred American towns and cities, from Portland, Maine to Dubuque, Iowa and Mobile, Alabama, heard performances by some of Europe's best-known pianists. Sigismund Thalberg, a rival of Franz Liszt, was among those who toured, and he even played in Peoria.
R. Allen Lott follows five of these pianists on their American visits and shows how classical music reached the country's interior. The book is written for readers of music history, American cultural history and the history of the piano, and for anyone curious about how Mark Twain's America experienced the concert world.
