Planet of Viruses opens with the disruption caused by an invisible germ in 2020, and then looks past the viruses people know from colds and Covid-19. Viruses also cause a wide range of other diseases, including one that makes people grow branch-like outgrowths.
Zimmer makes the point that viruses have been part of human life for so long that people are, in one sense, partly made of them: the human genome holds more DNA from viruses than from the genes that make us. The book describes what scientists have learned about these agents since then.
