The collection picks up a line of integrative brain research that began in the mid-twentieth century under Paul MacLean, and which fell out of view as neuroscience turned to biochemical and genetic findings. The contributors extend MacLean's findings and integrative theory, and test them against current work.
The approaches range from modelling and comparisons across species to the basic science of psychiatry and theoretical accounts of political and economic systems. The editors argue that social and economic sciences have often worked without theories grounded in brain function, and the volume tries to close that gap.
Gerald A. Cory Jr. and Russell Gardner Jr. lead the volume with their contributors. It will be useful to neurobehavioural researchers, psychologists, psychiatrists and social scientists. Edition note: published by Praeger in 2002, 432 pages, first edition, ISBN-13 9780275972196.
