About this book

This W. W. Norton & Company edition offers a fresh English translation of one of Chekhov's most widely performed plays, prepared by Laurence Senelick. The publisher describes Chekhov as a distinctive force in modern drama, valued for his wit and his insight into human nature.

The play follows characters whose wishes pull against one another while their footing becomes unsteady. Senelick's version aims to bring out the wit of the original and its concern with art and love.

Actors, directors, students of drama and general readers who want a new English text of the play will find this translation a practical starting point.
