About this book

The volume marks four centuries since the King James Bible appeared. It is the second part of a critical series edited by Gerald Hammond, and it presents the King James New Testament and the Apocrypha in full.

Each biblical book opens with an introduction that covers authorship, date and major themes. More than 2,000 explanatory notes clear up historical references, theological ideas and hard language, and each hard term from the 1611 translation receives an explanation. Textual problems are discussed openly, and the Apocrypha receives the same close attention as the canonical books.

The volume also gathers contextual and critical material, including excerpts from Greek, Roman and Jewish writers and from early Christian authors, along with commentary from later thinkers. It is suited to scholars, students and general readers who want to study the text closely.
