This book asks how valid anthropological fieldwork really is, and how far the cultural data gathered in the field are shaped by the interaction between the anthropologist and the people being studied. Rabinow turns the question on his own earlier work.
Having first published a more conventional ethnographic study of Morocco, he describes a series of encounters with the informants in that study. They include a French innkeeper who holds on to traces of the colonial era, and the country people descended from a seventeenth-century holy man.
The edition includes a new preface, in which Rabinow considers the thirty years since the book first appeared and his own career. Published by University of California Press in 1978, with 162 pages and ISBN-13 9780520034501.
