Modern seismology is a fairly young science, and most of its central ideas date from the second half of the nineteenth century. This book concentrates on seismological concepts, explaining how they arose and how they make up the modern understanding of the subject.
The history it traces falls into four periods, beginning with a time when earthquakes were explained mainly through myth, before the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, and moving on through direct observation to the ideas that followed. It suits students of geophysics and earth science, and anyone who wants to see how a scientific field was built.
