Henry Cowell's New Musical Resources was first published in 1930 and is regarded as one of the few serious technical studies written by a twentieth-century composer. Virgil Thomson called it a classic when he reviewed it in 1971.
For this edition David Nicholls adds an essay and notes to Cowell's text. The essay traces where the book's ideas came from and places Cowell's theories within a wider context, so that a modern reader can follow the argument and its background.
