This is presented as the first detailed study of Sicilian life during the reign of Frederick III, which ran from 1296 to 1337. It was a period when Sicily moved from a busy, prosperous Mediterranean trading centre to a poor and violent backwater.
By concentrating on that reign, the author argues that Sicilian life had many more problems than the changing shape of its overseas trade. The argument pushes back on accounts that look only at commerce.
The book is published by Cambridge University Press, ISBN-13 9780521521819. It suits readers of medieval history and Mediterranean studies.
