About this book

On the surface, Tim's life in Redfern is much like that of others on the fringe, where drugs, drink and women give both pleasure and pain. His family is in the background, and his city friends live with poverty and police harassment.

The most important relationship in the book is between Tim and the Old Man. He is Tim's teacher in the tribal ways and a traditional assassin, and through him Tim glimpses another world, one where the rules are different. The Old Man eventually asks Tim to kill as well, and the novel follows where that leads.

The author, Steven McCarthy, won the David Unaipon Award. Edition note: published by Univ of Queensland Pr in 1998, 141 pages. ISBN-13 9780702229633.
