This edited collection asks what Jewish heritage means in Britain now, and how it should be studied and kept. The editor, Tony Kushner, notes in his introduction that heritage is a contested idea in the British context, and the essays take that tension seriously. They look back at the heritage already produced and forward to what might still be developed.
The range is wide, running from social history to architecture and on to the place of Jewish women within the story. The volume aims for a theoretical framework rather than a simple survey, which makes it more useful to scholars working out how Jewish historiography and heritage preservation fit together. Those studying Jewish history in London and Manchester will find the material closest to their interests, and anyone interested in the built environment will find parts of it relevant.
