Peter Martyr was one of the leading Dominican saints of the thirteenth century, and in some accounts he outshone Dominic himself. Born in Verona to a family with Cathar sympathies, he converted to Catholicism and became one of the first generation of Dominicans, known as a powerful preacher and one of the earliest and best-known papal inquisitors.
In 1252, shortly after his appointment as inquisitor for Lombardy, he was assassinated by a group of Milanese heretics. Donald Prudlo points out that there was no modern monograph on Peter, and this book aims to fill that gap in the study of medieval saints and of the links between heresy and imperial politics.
The first half examines the stages of Peter's life, his miracles and his posthumous cult, including his role in the Dominican order and his preaching. The second half translates the major primary sources into English for students of canonisation, the Inquisition and local history. Routledge published this first edition in 2008. It runs to 318 pages. ISBN-13: 9780754662563.
