This book aims to deepen our picture of middle-class life in England during the Industrial Revolution. Brian Lewis asks questions that have often been overlooked: how the middle classes earned, and sometimes failed to earn, their money, and how they conducted their public and private lives.
The study also considers the civic and religious duties this class took on, and how its members saw themselves in relation to the rest of society. Lewis points out that these questions have been largely neglected, and the subtitle, Bourgeois Culture and Politics in Early Industrial England, sums up the focus.
