First published in 1774, this essay is one of the earliest texts to show French taste moving away from the classical gardens of Versailles towards the picturesque, or natural, style of garden design. Claude-Henri Watelet wrote it in the late eighteenth century.
Watelet works out his ideas on landscape through two examples: an ideal farm, and his own real garden, Moulin Joli, near Paris. The essay is a useful source for anyone studying garden history or French taste in the eighteenth century.
