The Emergence of Mexican America examines how Mexican Americans were represented in U.S. culture, law and politics, and how those representations tied into the growth of American capitalism and nationhood. John-Michael Rivera begins with the Mexican-American War and continues through the mass repatriation of Mexican laborers in 1939.
Rivera draws on a wide range of sources: fiction, non-fiction, essays, treaties, legal documents, political speeches, magazines, cartoons and advertisements, produced by both Mexican and Anglo Americans. Through these materials the author traces the complexities of what was called the Mexican question.
The book will interest scholars of Chicano and Latino studies, and it will also appeal to specialists in fields from history to anthropology.
