About this book

The book compares the role of the internet in recent international crises with an earlier parallel in the late nineteenth century. At that time, a new communications system built on submarine cable technology and faster newspaper printing carried news to a mass audience that could be quickly stirred up.

Britton describes the network of insulated copper wires that linked North America, the Caribbean, South America and Europe, and how it delivered telegraphic news into the press. The subtitle places the study in the geopolitics of the Americas between 1866 and 1903.
