Finland in the eighteenth century was no destination for the faint-hearted. Travellers reported winters cold enough to freeze brandy in the bottle, and summer journeys plagued by biting insects. Yet many also wrote lyrical accounts of sledging over ice from Stockholm and of the beauty of the lakes and islands.
Lurcock brings these forgotten journeys and their travellers back to life. Many were upper-class gentlemen who took Finland as an alternative to the Grand Tour, interested in farming, scenery and the picturesque. Others saw the Finns as a primitive people living in a virtuous state of nature, and met the reality with mixed responses. Scientists, adventurers, sailors and missionaries also appear.
The book is part anthology and part history, and it offers a picture of a country little known to the outside world at the time. CB Editions published it in 2010.ISBN-13: 9780956107398.
