Outrigger systems are rigid horizontal members that stiffen a tall building by tying its core or spine to columns placed further out. The book compares the idea to an outrigger that keeps a canoe from tipping over.
The publisher says that slender towers have used outriggers for close to five centuries, although the underlying principle is older still. The book follows how the approach developed as buildings grew taller and more ambitious, especially from the 1980s onwards.
Engineers, architects and students of tall building design will find the subject directly relevant to their work.
