Set during the reign of Charles II of England, the novel centres on Roxhythe, an aristocrat who is one of the King's close favourites and works as his trusted spy. The King sends him abroad to negotiate with other European heads of state, offering fewer wars and more royal marriages in return for money.
Roxhythe's loyal secretary cares more about what is best for the kingdom than about his master's schemes, and the contrast between the two men adds tension to the story. Heyer did not allow the book to be republished during her lifetime, so this is a late appearance for the novel.
