About this book

Cinema has always been a mixed medium. It shares its basic form with photography, borrows from the performing arts and the novel, and combines painting and music. The authors argue that this makes it the intermedial art form par excellence, yet film analysis has not yet taken that fact fully on board.

The book revisits how films should be analysed and how the idea of cinema as a form should be understood, using concepts from media theory and intermediality. It takes account of technical media such as the VCR and DVD and the effects of digitalisation.
