Molly Hite sets Virginia Woolf beside Elizabeth Robins (1862-1952), a novelist, actress and feminist activist. The comparison draws out a link between Woolf's dislike of women 'pleading a cause' in fiction, together with her habit of blurring, muting or leaving out tonal cues.
Hite argues that The Voyage Out, Mrs Dalloway and A Room of One's Own each draw on Robins's work, borrowing from it and at times criticising it. The book reads these texts for their narrative strategy, paying close attention to how tone is handled.
