An explosion strands the passengers of a starship on a barren alien planet. Their chances of survival are slim, but most of them are set on colonising the world and building a new society. What they build quickly becomes a harsh, male-dominated community in which the women are reduced to bearing children.
One of the survivors wants to accept her situation realistically and prepare for death. Her companions have no intention of respecting her right to choose, and they plan to force her into their scheme for reproduction. The novel follows that conflict and what it costs everyone involved.
The story looks at how a small society takes shape under pressure, and at who gets to decide what happens to women within it. It suits readers of speculative fiction about survival and the choices people make when everything has been lost.
