This is Volume 3 of the Biomembranes series, devoted to the receptors that allow cells to adhere to one another and to recognise each other. Proteins in the plasma membrane do much of this work, but they were only isolated and characterised comparatively late.
The book describes the four major classes of cell adhesion molecule, among them the immunoglobulin superfamily and the cadherins. It explains how the methods of molecular biology have helped to establish this classification.
