Six of the narratives in this volume come from Tolstoy's literary activity in the late 1850s. The title story is older, dating from 1852, which is also the year Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth appeared.
Tolstoy (1828 to 1910) was a Russian author and a master of realistic fiction. He is remembered mainly for War and Peace and Anna Karenina, his two longest books.
