This study looks at how the Old Testament describes Israel's bond with God, read against Assyrian royal propaganda. Its author shows that Israel adapted vocabulary from Assyrian vassal treaties when it described its covenant with God, and argues that the idea behind the word covenant is, at heart, closer to grace.
Reading the language in both its Assyrian and biblical settings, the study takes the text seriously in its ancient context. It then draws out the theological content and explores its modern relevance through dialogue with contemporary theologians.
This volume is number 16 in the Perspectives on Hebrew Scriptures and Its Contexts series. It was published by Gorgias Pr Llc in 2012, with 321 pages and ISBN-13 9781607240150.
