Heinlein chose each story and essay in this collection himself, and arranged them in date order, beginning with his first sale in 1939, a short story called Life-Line that appeared in Astounding. The order makes the collection a record of how his writing style and his views on life developed across his career.
Most of the pieces come with a foreword from Heinlein, and a few carry an afterword as well. Those notes give readers an unusually direct view of an author who was private and rarely wrote about himself, so the book comes close to an autobiography in the way it shows his thinking.
