Volker Wagner's German-language book reads Old Testament passages on the Sabbath, on the household use of animals and on legal life, looking for traces of profanity (ordinary, non-sacred use) and of sacralisation (the process by which something comes to be treated as holy).
The central question is whether the non-sacred character of these areas of life is the product of a process of secularisation. The author finds that the sources do not make this clear. Instead they seem to show the cult gaining ground, with the worshipping community offering its own ways of keeping valued customs alive.
It will be of interest to scholars and students of biblical studies and the history of religion who work on the boundary between the sacred and the everyday.
