This book collects the papers from the first international conference on Jewish and Christian homiletics, held in Bamberg, Germany, from 6 to 8 March 2007. Scholars from both traditions met to compare how preaching developed in each and to examine how the two have related to each other.
A common assumption links the Christian sermon to the Jewish derasha, but the history of contact between the two traditions has not been fully written. The papers ask whether homiletical encounters can be traced, whether there is a shared homiletical history in rabbinic times and the Middle Ages as well as in the modern era, and which developments now affect preaching in the twenty-first century.
Readers working in homiletics, Jewish and Christian theology and the history of preaching will find the collection useful for research and for the practice of preaching.
