In the Middle Ages the papal court was the most important destination for learned Latin poetry in Europe. Many authors wrote to the apostolic see without being asked, dedicated works to individual popes and praised them in verse. This German-language book looks at that body of poetry and the expectations and aims that lay behind it.
The period covered runs from the sixth century to the early fifteenth century. Thomas Haye focuses on what the poets hoped to gain and how they presented the popes in their works. The book is aimed at scholars and students of medieval Latin, medieval literature and church history, and at readers with an interest in the relations between literature and power.
