Heide Wegener examines the categories of German noun inflection from the learner's side. The book looks at how number, gender and case are marked on nouns, articles, adjectives and pronouns, and how a learner comes to notice these markers while picking up German naturally as a second language.
Before turning to acquisition, the study sets out the semantic and syntactic work that each grammatical category does in the language. It then shows how the inflectional paradigms are organised as a system, and what that organisation means for learners who have to master them.
Teachers of German as a second language, applied linguists and researchers in second-language acquisition are the readers this detailed morphological study is written for.
