Ute Hafner's German-language book looks at how official given names in Spain changed in the period after Franco. The study rests on an indirect survey of 20,000 young people born between 1968 and 1982, of whom roughly a third, about 7,000, returned the questionnaire.
The book sets this against the new Spanish name law of the 1970s, and asks whether naming still follows traditional patterns, with the name María as one of the cases examined.
Readers of Spanish society, onomastics and social change will find the study of interest.
