Once Laurence Sterne's novel reached readers in five parts during the 1760s, booksellers saw a surge of commercial interest. Smaller publishers and anonymous writers seized on the success.
The result was a flood of imitations, ironic tracts and works whose style and titles echo the novel. Bosch's study looks at these eighteenth-century works, at how they perceived Sterne's novel, and at how they were shaped by it.
The book will be of interest to scholars of eighteenth-century English fiction and of the early history of the novel.
